Italy launches the first complete tourist guide for Muslim Travelers

Set to be released in mid-November is Italy’s first tourist guide dedicated to Muslim travelers. Following Spain’s lead, Italy unveils its rich historical-cultural treasures that mirror Islamic heritage, making it an irresistible destination for Muslim Travelers.

Salento, known as Europe’s “gateway to the East,” stands as the focal point of this guide. Strategically positioned, it overlooks Muslim Balkans and serves as a nexus for Mediterranean countries. This region in Puglia, which historically saw the rise of two Emirates in Taranto and Bari and hosted Europe’s first Islamic university in Casamassima (though never opened), boasts unique historical evidence. For instance, Otranto preserves tangible traces of the historic 1480 clash between Christianity and Islam.

Guided by the expert in Islamic Economy and tourism, Karim Benvenuto, the guide details captivating itineraries for Muslim Travelers. These include “muslim friendly” certified restaurants, places of worship, family-friendly attractions, tailored experiences for Muslim tourists, certified accommodations, as well as Halal standard local cuisine workshops and shops specializing in Modest Fashion and Salento craftsmanship.

This tool proves invaluable for international Tour Operators, often struggling to design specific packages for a Muslim audience. Additionally, it’s ideal for Generation Z and Millennials who favor independent travel.

A further enhancement for this guide will occur during the Mediterranean Games in Taranto in 2026, where a significant percentage of participating countries (and athletes) profess the Islamic faith.

With this initiative, Salento and Italy position themselves as leading destinations in hospitality and touristic inclusivity towards the Muslim community.
